Dr Antonio Uzal Fernandez
Dr Antonio Uzal Fernandez is an Associate Professor of Conservation Biology at Nottingham Trent University, where he teaches on postgraduate ecology programmes, supervises doctoral researchers, and chairs the School’s Research Ethics Committee. Originally from Spain, he trained in biology and ecology before working as a consultant on wolf conservation, later moving to the UK to complete a PhD at Bournemouth University on the ecological impacts of Sika deer on lowland heath ecosystems. His research spans over two decades and focuses on understanding how human activities shape ecological processes, particularly in mammalian systems, using approaches such as telemetry, remote sensing, and bioacoustics to monitor wildlife populations. He has worked internationally across Europe, Africa, and North America on topics including large carnivore ecology, herbivore impacts, ecosystem restoration, and human–wildlife interactions, and collaborates widely with academic and conservation partners. Dr Uzal’s work aims to generate evidence-based tools for conservation, supporting policy, wildlife management, and the restoration of degraded ecosystems, while addressing challenges such as biodiversity loss and human–wildlife conflict.

I have been a passionate supporter of environmental protection and conservation for over 35 years. Al Gore’s book “Earth in the Balance” published in 1992 had a huge impact on me. Much of my enthusiasm for environmental issues comes from my love of animals.
I’m very happy and honored to become a part of the supervisory team at Enarau. I discovered Enarau through an Earthwatch trip in 2025 and I believe wholeheartedly in the work that you are doing.

His work spans ecosystem restoration, biodiversity conservation, ecological integrity assessment, and science-based approaches to landscape resilience.
Dr. Gichira has extensive field experience conducting ecological assessments across montane, savanna, coastal, and restoration ecosystems in East Africa, with research interests in restoration ecology, plant biodiversity, and ecosystem functioning. He has led and contributed to multidisciplinary initiatives in biodiversity monitoring, restoration planning, and ecosystem health assessment, working in partnership with research institutions, conservation organisations, and local communities.
Prior to CERK, he lectured in Botany at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), where he taught plant sciences and supervised undergraduate research. He has also worked as a scientific editor supporting peer-reviewed manuscript preparation, and as a propagation specialist with Syngenta Kenya.
Dr. Gichira holds a PhD and MSc in Botany from the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, and a BSc in Biotechnology (Botany) from JKUAT. His doctoral research examined the evolutionary history, conservation genetics, and biogeography of Afromontane taxa, including Hagenia abyssinica and Dendrosenecio, within the Eastern Afromontane biodiversity hotspot. His field expeditions across major East African ecosystems, including Afromontane, drylands and coastal, continue to inform his commitment to science-driven restoration and long-term conservation of African landscapes.

Neil Anthony
Neil's passion for conservation began when he visited Kenya in the 1970s. He then returned to his home country to pursue education and work for global companies around the world. When Neil returned to Kenya in 2015, he found the landscape he once left intact, with thriving wildlife, at stake, facing serious challenges of degradation. He saw the need to play a part in restoring the landscape, including improving the needs of the local communities in the Mara and Samburu.
He joined the Maa Trust as a Trustee, seeking ways and means to impact the local community. He supported Kenya Wildlife Trust, wanting to steer research that would inform the conservation of key species. He founded the One Mara Research Hub, longing for scientists to freely share data and research with others conducting research in the landscape. His dream was to consolidate research findings that could influence policy makers in the landscape.
Neil played a key role in the development of the Greater Mara ecosystem management plan and its monitoring framework. In 2022, Neil founded the Centre for Ecosystem Restoration Kenya, where he currently serves as a board member. His goal is to build an organization with the capacity and expertise to provide evidence-based restoration in the Mara Landscape.
He played a key role in the formation of biodiversity restoration and monitoring plots at his site in the Mara, and then realized the need to demonstrate these methodologies on a larger scale. This led him to support the formation of the Enarau Conservancy, contributing a significant amount from his personal funds to reclaim the habitats that were once part of the greater Mara Serengeti ecosystem. Neil Legacy will leave behind a thriving landscape with diverse wildlife and vibrant communities.

Marietta Keru’s path into conservation is woven from two worlds: the precision of an accountant and the intuition of someone who has lived close to Kenya’s wild landscapes. Her career began in finance, but the pull of the outdoors—and the people whose lives are intertwined with it—drew her into hospitality, where she went on to manage high end lodges in the Maasai Mara and Lamu. Those years on the frontlines of tourism gave her a deep understanding of how wildlife, culture, and community livelihoods intersect every single day.
That experience became the foundation of her work in conservation. Today, Marietta served as the Manager for the Great Plains Foundation in Kenya. In this role, she leads programmes that strengthen the relationship between wildlife conservation and local livelihoods—designing and implementing high impact initiatives in education, community resilience, and ecosystem protection across key Great Plains landscapes.
Marietta’s work continues to strengthen the connection between people, wildlife, and protected landscapes—advancing a future where communities thrive alongside the ecosystems they help steward.
